When a clogged drain is an emergency
A slow drain can wait for a daytime appointment. Water rising in a tub when you flush the toilet, sewage smell in the basement, or gurgling from every fixture at once cannot wait.
Those signs point at the main line, and every minute of delay adds wastewater to the lowest room in the house.
- Stop running water. Skip the dishwasher, washing machine and showers until the line is open.
- Do not pour drain chemicals into a standing blockage. They sit in the pipe and burn whoever opens it next.
- Lift valuables and rugs off a basement floor and keep children and pets out of any standing water.
- Note which fixtures back up first. A basement floor drain that bubbles when upstairs fixtures drain is a strong main-line clue.

What actually clogs drains in Belleville homes
Belleville's tap water is soft. The 2023 water quality report put hardness at 48.7 ppm, about 2.9 grains per gallon, so mineral scale is rarely what narrows a drain here.
The usual causes are grease that cooled in the trap, hair and soap film in tub lines, wipes sold as flushable, and tree roots finding a joint in an older lateral.
That matters because each cause wants a different tool. Grease and soap respond to hot water and a cable. Roots need a cutting head or hydro jetting, and a recurring clog needs a camera before anyone guesses.
Which tool clears which clog
We match the tool to the blockage instead of running the same cable through every drain.
| Clog location | Common cause | Usual method |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen sink branch | Grease and food paste | Hand auger or small drum cable, then hot flush. |
| Bathroom sink or tub | Hair and soap film | Hand-held cable, trap cleaning. |
| Toilet and branch line | Wipes, toys, too much paper | Closet auger first, floor-level cable if it persists. |
| Basement floor drain | Silt, lint, roots | Larger cable, camera if it returns. |
| Main line to the street | Roots, grease buildup, a belly in the pipe | Heavy cable or sewer line cleaning, then a camera look. |
If a cable cannot pass or the clog returns within weeks, the pipe itself is the problem. That is when a camera inspection earns its cost.
Kitchen sink clogs are their own problem
A kitchen line carries grease, starch and food solids, so it clogs faster than any other drain in the house. The blockage is often a few feet past the trap, where a cooled grease plug traps everything else behind it.
If a disposal sits on the sink, the clog may be past the disposal or inside it. A jammed disposal and a clogged line look the same from above, so we check which one before cutting anything. When the unit itself is failing, our garbage disposal repair page explains the repair versus replace decision.
Snaking, cabling and when to step up to jetting
A cable punches a hole through a clog. It clears the flow quickly and costs less, but it leaves the pipe wall coated, which is why grease clogs return.
Jetting uses high-pressure water to scrub the pipe wall. We recommend it when a cable got stuck, when the same line has clogged more than once, or when roots are the cause. It is not a fit for every pipe, and a camera look first tells us whether a cracked or collapsed line would be damaged by pressure.
Signs the clog is more than one fixture
Use this list before you call. It helps us send the right equipment on the first trip.
- More than one drain is slow at the same time.
- Water backs up into a tub or shower when a toilet flushes or the washer drains.
- A basement floor drain gurgles or smells like sewage.
- The toilet bowl level rises and falls without a flush.
- The clog returns within a few weeks of the last cleaning.
Two or more of these usually means the main line, and the main line is where our heavier equipment comes in.
Storm days, the Third River and floor drains
Parts of Belleville near the Third River, including Fairway Avenue, Suzanne Court, Carolyn Road and Dorothea Terrace, have flooded repeatedly. The township reported the flooding again after the remnants of Hurricane Ida passed on September 1, 2021.
If you live in a low block like that, a floor drain that backs up on a heavy-rain day may not be a clog at all. Check with a plumber before assuming the cleaning fixed it, and read our notes on sump pump repair if your basement also takes on water.
Codes behind the work
Clearing a drain with a cable does not change the piping. A repair does. New Jersey's plumbing subcode adopts the National Standard Plumbing Code Illustrated, 2021 edition, through N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.15. Any pipe we replace or alter follows it, including trap arms, venting and cleanout access.
What drain cleaning costs and what changes the price
We quote before work starts, so you see a clear price before any cable goes down the line. The number depends on a few real factors.
- Which line is blockedA single fixture branch takes less time than a main line to the street.
- AccessA cleanout makes the job short. No cleanout means pulling a toilet or working from a roof vent.
- The tool neededA hand auger, a drum cable and a jetter are different jobs with different time on site.
- Time of dayAfter-hours dispatch costs more than a weekday visit, and we tell you that up front.
- A camera lookIf a clog returns, seeing the pipe prevents paying for the same cable job twice.
Insurance note: most homeowners policies cover sudden water damage from a backup only if you carry a sewer or water backup endorsement, so check your declarations page.

Questions Belleville homeowners ask about drain cleaning
Yes. Our line is open 24/7, including holidays. A backed-up main line or a sewage smell gets dispatched first, and we give you a clear price before the work starts.
If more than one fixture is slow, if a basement floor drain gurgles, or if the toilet makes noise when the washer drains, the main line is the likely culprit. A single slow sink usually means a branch clog.
We advise against it. Chemical cleaners can sit in a stopped pipe, damage old metal and PVC joints, and burn the technician who opens the line. Try a plunger, then call.
Not always. A cable opens a channel but leaves residue. If the clog returns inside a few weeks, we recommend jetting or a camera look to find the cause.
Yes. Many Belleville buildings have two or three units sharing one main line, so we ask which units are affected and whether the blockage is upstream of a shared cleanout.
We dispatch to Nutley, Bloomfield, Newark, Kearny and North Arlington. See emergency plumbing in Nutley for how coverage works just north of Belleville.
