Sewer backup emergency: what to do first
A backup that reaches a basement floor is a health and property problem at once. Wastewater carries bacteria, and a flooded basement floor can short out appliances.
- Stop using water everywhere in the house until the line is open.
- Keep people and pets out of the standing water, and wear boots and gloves if you have to enter.
- Shut off power to the basement only if you can reach the panel without stepping through water.
- Do not use chemical drain cleaners. They harm the pipe and the crew that clears it.
Call (973) 488-5410. We dispatch 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays.
What jetting does that a cable cannot
A cable cuts a channel through the middle of a blockage. The rest of the grease and sludge stays on the walls, and the line clogs again.
A jetter sends a stream through a hose with nozzles that fire backward and sideways. The water cuts roots, strips grease and flushes the debris out toward the sewer. The pipe is cleaned instead of merely opened.
Cable or jetter: choosing the right tool
We pick based on the pipe, the blockage and the history of the line.
| Situation | Cable | Hydro jetting |
|---|---|---|
| First-time simple clog | Usually enough | Not needed. |
| Same line clogged more than once | Short-term fix | Recommended. |
| Tree roots | Cuts the root, leaves the stubs | Cuts and washes out the root. |
| Grease buildup in a kitchen line | Opens the line | Cleans the pipe wall. |
| Cracked, collapsed or offset pipe | Can snag | Not safe until a camera confirms the pipe. |
Our drain cleaning page covers when a cable is the right first call.
Why we look with a camera first
Pressure can make a damaged pipe worse. A pipe with a crack, a missing section or a collapsed joint can wash out soil or fail under a jetter.
A camera pass shows the pipe condition, the clog type and the best nozzle. Our sewer camera inspection page explains what the camera records and what you get to see.
Roots, grease and the stormwater side of the property
Roots seek water, and a hairline crack in a clay or cast iron joint gives them a way in. Jetting clears the roots. Cutting back the source is a separate decision, and sewer line repair or lining is what stops regrowth.
Jetting also clears yard drains and downspout lines that fill with silt and leaves. This storm drain work matters near the Second River and Third River, where heavy rain tests every outdoor drain on the block.
When to ask for jetting
Jetting is a good fit if any of these sound familiar.
- A cable got stuck or came out with roots or grease.
- The same drain has clogged more than twice in a year.
- A restaurant, a two-family home or a building with heavy kitchen use shares the line.
- A camera shows heavy scale or sludge on the pipe wall.
- You want to restore flow before relining or repair work.
If you are unsure, call and describe the history. We tell you honestly if a cable will do.
Standards that apply
Jetting itself is a maintenance task, but the access points it relies on are regulated. New Jersey's plumbing subcode adopts the National Standard Plumbing Code Illustrated, 2021 edition, through N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.15. That code governs cleanout placement and pipe sizing, which is why we recommend a code-compliant cleanout when a line has none.
What changes the price of hydro jetting
We quote before work starts. These are the factors that move it.
- Line length and accessA short run from a cleanout is quicker than a long run from a roof vent.
- The camera passA look first adds time and prevents damaging a weak pipe.
- Pipe size and materialLarger lines and older cast iron need different nozzles and pressure.
- Blockage severityHeavy roots or years of buildup take longer to cut and flush.
- After-hours dispatchNight and weekend calls cost more than weekday ones, and we say so first.
Insurance note: most homeowners policies do not pay to clear a clog, and backup damage is usually covered only with a water backup endorsement. Check your declarations page.

Questions Belleville homeowners ask about hydro jetting
Yes. Our line is open 24/7. Sewage backing into a basement is the type of call we dispatch first, and we give you a clear price before we start.
It can if the pipe is cracked or collapsed. That is why we run a camera first and only jet pipes that can take the pressure.
For a first simple clog, a cable is usually enough. For repeat clogs, roots or heavy grease, jetting cleans the whole pipe and lasts longer.
A typical residential job takes a couple of hours including the camera pass. Long lines and heavy roots take more.
Yes. See commercial plumbing for how we handle after-hours work and grease lines for small businesses.
Yes. Silt and leaves choke these lines quickly. We can jet them too, and it is a useful check before a storm season.
