The code that governs the work
New Jersey's plumbing subcode adopts the National Standard Plumbing Code Illustrated, 2021 edition, through N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.15. Fixture spacing, venting, trap arms and drain sizes all follow it.
Plumbing must be performed by a master plumber, an authorized plumbing contractor, or their employees. Ask any plumber to show the license number that must appear on their invoice, then verify it with the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers.
Ask the Belleville township office at 973-450-3300 which permits apply to your project.
Typical installation projects
Scope shapes the price and the time.
| Project | What is involved | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Replace a toilet | Remove, reset flange, new seal and supply | Short visit. |
| Replace a kitchen faucet and disposal | New supply lines, mounting and test | Short visit. |
| Add a bathroom sink | Supply, drain, vent and shutoffs | Half to full day. |
| New gas line for a range | Pressure test, sized pipe and shutoff | Half to full day. |
| Bathroom rough-in | Supply, drain and vent for new fixtures | Several days. |
Time depends on access and the state of the existing plumbing.
Gas line safety
Gas work requires care. Every gas line is pressure tested, and every appliance gets a shutoff valve. If you smell gas, leave the building and call PSE&G at 1-800-880-7734, then 911 if the smell is strong.
Do not move a gas appliance yourself. A flexible connector that is too old or kinked can leak. We replace old connectors and test every joint.
Backflow prevention
A backflow preventer stops contaminated water from flowing back into the clean supply. Lawn irrigation, boilers, fire lines and some commercial fixtures require one.
Types and test rules vary. Ask Belleville Water at 973-450-3414 about requirements for your property, and we install the device and coordinate any testing.
Do you need a water softener?
Belleville's 2023 report lists hardness at 48.7 ppm, which is soft. Most homes here do not need a softener for hardness.
If you want filtration for taste or chlorine, a carbon filter is a different product. We install either, and we tell you honestly if the benefit is small for your water.
How an installation project runs
You approve each step.
- Walk-throughWe look at the space, the existing plumbing and your choices.
- QuoteYou receive a written price and a schedule.
- InstallWe do the work and protect floors and fixtures.
- Test and walk throughWe test and show you how it works.
Planning a bathroom or kitchen remodel
A remodel is the best time to fix plumbing. Walls are open, and old valves, drains and supply lines can be replaced at little extra cost. Bring the plumber in early, before cabinets and tile are ordered, so fixture locations and drain sizes are set.
Rough-in comes first. The plumber sets drains, vents and supply lines to the fixture layout, then the inspector checks them before the walls close.
What changes installation pricing
We quote before work starts.
- Fixture and brandFixtures vary widely in price.
- Existing plumbingOld pipes may need repair to connect.
- AccessWalls, floors and stairs add time.
- Permits and inspectionFees depend on the township and the job.
- SchedulingEvening and weekend work costs more than weekday work.
Insurance note: new installations are not insured repairs. If an install replaces a failed fixture after a loss, ask your insurer first.
